The Life and Dysfunction of Nadine Daniels by Hadena James

Nadine Daniels’ life is a disaster. The security company that she owns is being sued, her mother is coming to visit for a week, and some unpleasant realities about her “charity” work are about to surface. She thought this was as bad as it could get, but she was wrong—dead wrong.
Someone believes she knows a secret – a secret worth killing for. With assassins tracking her every move, Nadine wishes the only thing she had to worry about was her mother pestering her to settle down with her suspected live-in boyfriend, Zeke, but she can’t think about the future when the present might end with her death.

So I got my proofreader’s notes back for my first in the newest trilogy. Instead of looking through them, I am writing another review for all you pretties. This book is also titled “The Dysfunctional Affair” depending on if you look at Goodreads or Amazon.

In the past I have done two reviews for this author. However, this is a different series, so I was wanting to see what else the author has.  I really like their Dreams and Reality series, so I figured that I may like more of their writing.  I have found that in some cases authors may have one great series in one genre, but when they try another, it falls a bit flat.

That isn’t to say that I didn’t like this story, I did, but compared to the first two in the other series, it wasn’t as good. First let’s talk about the book and then I can talk about my feelings about it.

Nadine Daniels is the owner of a security company. Her company is in the middle of a lawsuit. Her mother is on her way, and some of her other ‘work’ is about to have light shining on it. Most companies have a lawsuit once in awhile, so that isn’t that big of a deal.  However Nadine’s mother is has a very strong will. She is a believer that women can do anything and everything, and has the gun to prove it. Now I am all for female power, her mom may take it a bit too far.  To each their own though, right?

The big issue is that a employee of hers, Zeke, was in need of a place to stay. So she naively told him that he could stay with her. Until her mom finds out that she had a man living with her. Obviously that means they are together and about to enter into marriage. Oh yeah Zeke’s mom is a lot like Nadine’s and she also just happens to be coming into town.  So Nadine who is a lover of Great Danes, she has a variable baseball team of them. She is now stuck between assassins trying to kill her and her marrying someone that she doesn’t even really like.  I mean she likes him fairly well, they work together, but not in the “till death due us part” way.

So there is also some extended family that gets thrown in. Apparently everyone is Nadine’s relative. Or at least everyone that she doesn’t want snooping around in her side business is.

I like this story. It is a bit rough around the edges, but so is Nadine. I think my biggest issue is the way that the character is formed. I just can’t like her. It isn’t that I dislike her, I just don’t like her either. So story is good, just for me the character fell flat.  I am going to try to read another one in the series, because I do like the author. It could be that I read this right after I read her other series that is much darker and twisted. This book isn’t dark, but it does have its twists and turns. Overall the plot is good, I just don’t connect with the main character.
