So for some reason this was on my wishlist. So one day I was looking for a book to read and bought this one. I didn’t initially remember reading the first book, and so had to actually go back and read it.
Anywhos, that kinda shows where my brain is at the moment. 2020 has kinda been a year, I think for everyone. I know that for us over in Oregon have had it both good and bad depending on the month. Right now we are dealing with some forest fires. Thankfully none that are impacting our house, but family members of mine have been directly impacted.
So Spell Disaster picks up at the end of A Spell of Trouble with Isolde Quinn, a magical pet store owner. She happens to see what she thinks is an elderly witch summoning a demon. Now with what happened in the first book, Isolde doesn’t want Enid to get in trouble. Nor does she want Dex Nolan to see that there is in fact paranormal happenings.
The problem is, the demon kills someone, a human, which also brings in the local sheriff. He is not paranormal and wants to ensure a quick solving to the murder case. It is determined where the Demon is. It then becomes a race for Isolde to bring a quick resolution or lose people who are close to her.
I liked this story, even though at the beginning I wasn’t quite sure what was going on. As I read it, though I was able to pick up pieces that connected me to the first book. I think that you can read this story by itself. There are just times it may take a bit longer to catch up when they refer to something that happened in the previous book. It is a complete story by itself.
The characters are strong and you enjoy them. You care about the characters and what happens to them. Even when those characters kinda piss you off. Not in the sense that they are bad people, just their actions seem to undermine themselves and/or others. I think that the author did a good job at making even those characters are essential to the story and you as a reader care about them. Even though you want to hate them, and sometimes you do hate them, but you also care about them.
Sometimes when you get into a cozy mystery, it focuses more on the people and less on mystery. This book really does well on focusing on both in such a way that you don’t gain one at the loss of another. What this does it allow the mystery to shine, while also allowing the character’s personalities and sometimes quirks to be known as well. I feel that doing it this way really sets it up well for a series, because you become invested in the characters. This means that regardless of the plot line for the book, the characters are what brings you back.
