An Interview with Kendall Grey and Giveaway!

To celebrate the release of BEATS, the 2nd book in the Hard Rock Harlots series by Paranormal Romance and Erotica author Kendall Grey, I will be posting Kendall related posts through Friday.

I know that Erotica is not really the “theme” of this blog, but Kendall has such a way with words that I can’t help but spread the word about both her Erotica and Paranormal Romance books. Her Erotica series, Hard Rock Harlots starts with Strings (Hard Rock Harlots). Her Paranormal Romance series begins with Inhale: A Just Breathe Novel,  which is free on Amazon right now. The proceeds from the rest of the JUST BREATHE series sales goes directly to a camp for kids that gets them involved with the research and preservation of whales. This is a very important subject for Kendall and I think it’s pretty awesome that she is helping to educate kids.

If you are offended by language & intense sexual situations, after you check out today’s interview, come back Wednesday & Friday. Tuesday, & Thursday I will be featuring pieces about her Erotica series. Wednesday & Friday I will have Kendall related posts that will not be focused on Erotica. Friday will be all about her Paranormal Romance series.

Don’t forget to check out the giveaway and come back every day for extra entries!

So here’s my interview with Kendall. This interview was done right after I got to hang out with her and be her assistant at Book Bash here in Orlando. We had a great time. She really is such a gracious and awesome author. And let me tell you, she’s freakin’ hilarious!

When naming your characters, do you give any thought to the actual meaning?

Almost all of my characters (even the minor ones) have significant names. Zoe’s (from the JUST BREATHE Trilogy) name means “life.” Gavin from JUST BREATHE means “a falcon.” Yileen is an Aboriginal word for “a dream.” And all of the Elementals in that series have names that relate to their Elements (Sinnder, Scarlet, and Byrn are Fyres. Hawthorne is an Erthe. Vexx is an Aer. Xanthos, who’s named after a river, is a Wæter). In STRINGS, Letty’s last name is Dillinger. John Dillinger was a famous bank robber. You’ll find out who Toombs is named after in BEATS. And Jinx’s real name has personal significance for me. Can’t tell you about it until after the book comes out. 😉

What about the titles of your novels?

All of my novels have significant titles too. INHALE and EXHALE were named after the beautiful sound whales make when they blow. The only way to describe that huge, loud rush out and back in again is “big!” JUST BREATHE fit perfectly with the other two titles, and it’s also the name of Gavin’s band. I chose STRINGS and BEATS for their many definitions. You can take those words in a lot of different ways, and I tried to play up the multiple meanings throughout the books.

Did you always want to write?

I’ve always written, but I haven’t always been particularly good at it. The writing bug bit me in 2008, and I haven’t stopped since. Maybe I’ll stick with it for a while longer. 🙂

How do you relax?

I dream up new stories. 🙂

Strangest place you’ve gotten an idea for a story.

The shower is the strangest and most common place I get ideas. Not sure why, but my best ones come when I least expect them, usually while I’m trying to get shampoo out of my hair. HA!

How many hours do you work a day on the process of writing a book?

It depends on where I am in the process. When I’m in drafting mode, I spend anywhere from two to six hours writing. When I get to revisions, it becomes hardcore. Revising is my favorite stage, so I tend to get pretty engrossed in it. Many days I don’t work on the book itself at all, but I spend hours promoting, replying to emails and posts, or doing other related things.

Who inspired you?

My parents. They were always supportive of everything I did as both a child and an adult. I truly believe if you have a supportive family, you can do anything you put your mind to.

Do you have any advice for an aspiring writer?

Keep writing. Persevere, despite the repeated kicks to the head. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

What (or who) is your greatest treasure?

Resident Geek (my husband) and my three Demonlings. My dog isn’t far behind. My computer is probably the greatest nonliving treasure in my life. So many wonderful things on it—pictures, stories, videos.

What is your greatest regret in life?

That my mom never got to meet my kids.

Do you ever write naked?

Never ever never. I love my dog too much to blind her! HAHA!

Are there any occupational hazards to being a novelist?

Lots of aches and pains from sitting in the same position too long. Or maybe I’m just old. I also have a perverted mind now. Though, I could have been born like that. 😉

What do you/did you want to be when you grow/grew up?

I wanted to be a veterinarian, a teacher, a librarian (though I’ve never been much of a reader), a rock star, an inventor, and a witch.

Who would play you in a film of your life?

Courtney Love

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever been asked to autograph?

Until recently, it had been boobs (which aren’t weird at all), but at Book Bash in Orlando, someone asked me to sign a dildo. Actually, it was the dildo packaging rather than the device itself. Still, pretty cool!
