Immortal Revenge by Mary Abshire Guest Post & Giveaway

For today’s post, we have a guest post from the lovely Mary Abshire, author of several paranormal series, including Midnight Garden , Project Eve, and The Soul Catcher. Immortal Revenge is the first book in her new Legacy Series. Mary will be discussing how we feel about the characters we read about and develop emotions for.

Attachment to Characters

Have you ever read a novel and just fell in love with the characters? Or did you find the characters easy to relate to?

Of all the books I’ve wrote I’d have to say the characters in Immortal Revenge are my favorite so far. I had an attachment to Katie, my protagonist, from the beginning. She is an emotional wreck having lost the love of her life and her home. But she is strong. She is a survivor and she wants someone to pay for murdering her lover, Kyle.

Who does she turn to first for support? Her best friend, of course. That’s who I turn to when I need a shoulder to cry on. And who is Katie’s best friend? Oh, a roller-skating disco queen named Jules who tends bar with her at the Tasmanian Devil. Jules brings humor and compassion into the story. She’s also a bit of a snoop, like a detective. She makes me laugh.

How and why did I create Jules? Katie is a kick ass type of character, which means she’s a bit serious. She is determined to get revenge for her lover’s untimely demise. So, she needed someone to bring light into her world. Someone different. Someone she could trust since she was in love with an immortal. (Story is set in present time and humans are not aware of the existence of vampires.) Katie’s best bud had to have an open mind and a great sense of humor. Why not a disco queen who likes to roller skate? I thought the traits were different from anything I’d read, so I went with them.

There’s another character that she is good friends with. His name is Ben and he’s a police officer. Katie went to college and briefly dated Ben. He’s the normal, good, down to earth kind of guy. He’s the hunk with a heart your mom wants you to come home with.

Then there is Riker, Kyle’s longtime friend. He’s nothing like Kyle. Riker is cold, unemotional, and see’s everything black and white. When I created him, I thought of a version of Eric Northman from True Blood. He brings complications into Katie’s world, but also logic and knowledge. He also wakes her up to reality. She has a role to play and it was decided centuries ago.

Katie’s boss at the Tasmanian Devil bar is another character I enjoyed creating. He gives off this rough and tough persona. He retired from the Marines, collects rare antiquities and was an alcoholic once. Behind closed doors, he’s the military guy who believes in aliens. He comes across as someone who sticks by the rules, but really, he has his own agenda. I thought these qualities made for a good boss for Katie and someone she could turn to in times of need.

Each character is different yet they all work well together. Maybe that’s why I’m attached to them. They complement each other and make for a good story.

If you’re interested in finding out more about my characters and enjoy action, mystery and humor, I invite you to read Immortal Revenge .

The cold-hearted man comes to Katie’s aid, but she doesn’t completely trust him. To keep her friends safe, she insists they leave town immediately. But her efforts come too late. A friend disappears and a clear message is left in the wake: surrender or more people will die.

Katie’s world is turned upside down when she discovers Riker has vowed to protect her. She’s involved in a prophecy, one which her lover had been preparing her for before his murder. All the combat training he gave her suddenly makes sense, and as Katie fights to keep her friends alive, she’s forced to prioritize. Revenge now, saving mankind next.
