Cold Blooded

By Amanda Carlson

cold blooded

Magic, mayhem and madness explode in this third installment in the Jessica McClain series.

Jessica McClain is on the run… again. Finally reunited with Rourke, Jessica arrives home to find that her best friend has been kidnapped, her father has vanished, and the supernatural Sects — witches, demons, and sorcerers — don’t even have the courtesy to wait until she is unpacked to attack. Now, mastering her powers as the sole female werewolf might not be enough to save them. Thrown together in a shaky truce with the Vampire Queen, Jessica must show all the different Sects what the true meaning of “the enemy of my enemy” is or her father will die…

My Review

Oh holy hell. Amanda Carlson wastes no time in getting down to business in this 3rd book of the Jessica McClain series. As with every book so far there is no lack of action or excitement. Cold Blooded continues on Jessica McClain’s adventure of living as an unexpected werewolf with way more power than anyone would have thought possible. She is joined by the always yummy Rourke, and Danny, as well as her brother Tyler and her vampire friend Naomi as they try to outwit vampires, sorcerers, and demons who are all trying to take Jessica’s power in one way or another.
This review may be shorter than my usual reviews because there is only so much I can say without giving away the story. Where Hot Blooded was about releasing Rourke from the clutches of that evil bitch Selene, Cold Blooded is more about what is going on with Eudoxia, the Vampire Queen. Is she an ally? Is she an enemy? Who is trying to kill Jessica today? So many questions! There is a crazy awesome battle at the ending that you are just not going to believe. Where is Jessica’s dad? Where did James run off to? You will just have to read it to find out because I’m not going to tell you!

As usual, this book was great. I expect nothing less from Carlson at this point and I have pretty much fallen head over heels for this series. In a lot of books, there is action, then a break where the characters get themselves together and maybe relax for a day or something nice happens or what have you. Not here. In Cold Blooded, and the rest of the series for that matter, there is action scene after action scene, after action scene. Frankly, I have no idea how Jessica is still alive because I swear that girl hasn’t had a break since the series started. She has been fighting for her life since she first shifted and I really hope she gets a nice vacation when people stop trying to kill her. Many times while reading, I can read a small section at a time and it’s easy to find a place to take a break for other things one needs to do in their daily lives, such as sleep, eat, take kids to school etc. In Cold Blooded , when you finish a chapter, you can’t help yourself but continue on to the next to find out what happens next. It’s amazing and awful at the same time because this means with no breaks, you finish the book sooner! This was definitely a book I couldn’t put down!
Cold Blooded really was so exciting to read and I am very grateful to the publisher for allowing me an advanced copy to review and give my honest opinion. My honest opinion is this: Go buy this book. Right now. No, not after you take a shower, drink your coffee, or get off work. Right freakin’ now. Pre-order it if it hasn’t been released yet. If you haven’t read the first two books in the series, go buy them too. You can read them (or re-read them) while you are waiting for Cold Blooded to arrive. Or get them from the library. Whatever you have to do, read this series. Please.
